The 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment has not been announced. August CPI-W rose to 328.481, but the law compares the July-August-September average with the third-quarter 2025 base. No final percentage exists until September data arrive on October 14.

Three rates that stand out

  1. August 2026 CPI-W was 328.481, following 327.104 in July.
  2. The published two-month average is 327.793, but the SSA formula requires all three third-quarter months.
  3. BLS schedules September CPI for October 14, 2026 at 8:30 AM ET; only then can the official 2027 COLA be determined.

Mechanical COLA scenarios at different September CPI-W levels

These index levels are not forecasts. They only show how the SSA formula changes when the missing September value changes.

Scenarios use the 2025 Q3 base average of 317.265 and round to the nearest 0.1%. SSA payment rounding, Medicare deductions, tax withholding and other deductions can change an individual's net amount.

QUICK ANSWER · Is the 2027 Social Security COLA final?

No. BLS reported an August CPI-W index of 328.481, after 327.104 in July. Social Security's COLA uses the average of all three third-quarter months: July, August and September. With September missing, percentages now circulating are not the official 2027 COLA.

FACT · What does the SSA formula compare?

SSA will compare the third-quarter 2026 average with 317.265, the CPI-W average for the third quarter of 2025, the last year in which a COLA became effective. A positive increase is rounded to the nearest 0.1%. The annual headline CPI-U rate and one month's CPI-W change do not replace this formula.

DATA · What do the two published months show?

The simple average of July's 327.104 and August's 328.481 is 327.7925, or 327.793 to three decimals. That two-month average is 3.318% above the 2025 Q3 base. It should not be presented as an interim COLA because September receives equal weight in the statutory calculation.

INTERPRETATION · Why doesn't 3.4% annual CPI automatically mean a 3.4% COLA?

August headline inflation of 3.4% is the year-over-year change in CPI-U. COLA uses a different index, CPI-W, and compares two third-quarter averages. The numbers can land near each other, but different populations and comparison periods mean they do not have to match.

SCENARIO · How could a $2,000 monthly benefit change?

If September CPI-W were 327.000, the mechanical formula would round to 3.2%; if it matched August at 328.481, it would round to 3.4%; and at 330.000 it would round to 3.6%. On a $2,000 gross monthly benefit, those scenarios equal roughly $64, $68 and $72. They are sensitivity examples, not inflation forecasts.

METHOD AND LIMITATIONS · What changes on October 14?

BLS is scheduled to publish September 2026 CPI at 8:30 AM ET on October 14. That release will complete the three-month CPI-W average and allow SSA to apply the statutory rounding rule. This analysis uses no third-party forecast and makes no assumption about September inflation, 2027 Medicare premiums or an individual's tax position.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR MY MONEY?

For a rough gross scenario, multiply your current monthly benefit by one plus the COLA rate. A $1,500 benefit would rise by about $48 a month at 3.2% or $54 at 3.6%. The amount deposited can differ because Medicare premiums, voluntary federal tax withholding, overpayment recovery or other deductions may apply. Check the official SSA notice and your own deductions before budgeting around a 2027 net payment.
